The holidays bring cheer, goodwill, and drop in guests. You know the dance we all play, where we keep a secret stash of “emergency” gifts on hand for people who we are not necessarily expecting to exchange presents with.

When they unexpectedly stop by to leave their package, they seemingly also find their way inside for a visit. Simply offering them a coffee and a store bought cookie seems weak, so how about providing something more inventive, and impressive.

To do this, do a search for “last minute” appetisers and you will be greeted with numerous recipes that can be whipped up in under ten minutes. The fact that they involve so little effort, and time dedication makes me feel a bit cheeky even referring to them as recipes. Some of my standby items are dips with cut fresh vegetables. Honestly, that actually takes the same amount of time as making a cup of coffee, or tea. Not to mention it is probably one of the healthiest items they will be offered all season.

And if you hand over that emergency gift to them and them pop off to the kitchen you will gain a few extra moments to whip up your snack, and you avoid the response the individual makes to the present. Win, Win.

The cupcake has become a very fashionable desert in the last couple of years. They are no longer relegated to children’s parties, but are now substituted for full-fledged wedding cakes. The flexibility of this desert continues to be tapped into, and this idea is the latest and greatest in my humble opinion. What will be next is a mystery, but one I look forward to with great anticipation, and watering mouth. Turn a regular sized cupcake into a shortcake surprise in a jiffy. In fact, once you see the final results you will not be able to believe what little effort it took to turn this little gem from a plain Jane cupcake into a smashing visual and delicious delight. Cut the cake into three layers, then insert a heaping spoonful of whipped cream in between each of them. Once you have the whole thing reassembled, place berries on the top and sprinkle with sugar. Just describing it has made me crave one.

There are certain key elements that make a home more conducive to entertaining within it. Simply serving lots of bubbly and gorgeous starters will only get you so far, you must do more in order to set the scene. For instance, some home furnishings lend themselves to creating an environment that allows for easy interaction. While others make mingling difficult and less enjoyable.

When you are selecting the furniture to be placed in the living room, dinning room and kitchen, and you plan to entertain regularly, keep a few things in mind. First, you will want the chairs to be comfortable as well as attractive. Do not opt for beauty over comfort, unless you want your guests to stay briefly. This means that you should pay attention not only to the construction of the chairs, but the upholstery too.

Second, confirm that the furniture you are interested in can be easily arranged to build convenient set ups. This means that the articles you choose can be placed with other items to establish an area that lends itself to socializing. The furniture layout that you design can make or break your entertaining prowess.

I just attended an appetizer party, and it has gotten me motivated to host my own. We have been avoiding having company over for the last couple of months because we gave our daughter a bunch of our chairs for her new flat. Of course the intention is to invest in new ones, but when we will get around to it is anybody’s guess. But, with an appetizer party, the idea is to be up and mingling, so you do not need as much seating.

Our guest list will involve eight to ten people, and therefore we plan to serve three or four types of apps. They will come from the categories of meat or poultry, fish or seafood, and cheese, vegetables or fruit. As it is only scheduled to last a couple of hours, the apps will not be as hearty as they should be for a longer stint.

One important thing to remember while selecting the food is that you want to have cold apps circulating while the hot ones are being heated. So, we will keep that as a priority to adhere to in our gathering. The idea is to keep things flowing while also making it simple, after all that should be the beauty of such an event.

In the last couple of months, we have been perusing the new homes that are for sale in our area. The idea in the back of our minds has been that now might be a really good time for us to downsize. For the majority of our marriage we have lived in an absolutely captivating house that we have sunk our hearts, souls and money into. It has fit us well, but change is in the air, as they say.

What we did not expect was to go on the hunt for a new house and to find that none could meet our lifestyle. You see we love to entertain, and have the perfect set up for it on any scale right now. So, for a bit we seemed to be stalled. But, once you have it in your head that you are ready to move, you find that you actually are ready.

Thus, we have had a change of tack in our journey, and are now looking at land for sale. The bottom line is we know what we want, and how we like things. Therefore, we have set our sights on building our next home. Which undoubtedly will keep us very busy, but not too busy to entertain.

Both Christmas and New Years are occasions that are traditionally big party time. People everywhere feel compelled to push themselves to the limits to impress guests. Without all the trimmings it seems as if we have failed in some way, and without grand presentations or displays we think things will look rather sparse or thin. However, when done properly simple can be well received, and the sense of calm that can come when things are not forced is appreciated.

For years my mother in law has turned into a miserable militaristic general of sorts for the whole week leading up to Christmas and Boxing Day. Each of those holidays she believes must be bigger than the last. What she has lost sight of is the way it makes those around her feel about the entire experience. So, while she meets new levels with four puddings instead of last year’s three, she also spends more time groaning about timing and stress.

So, when we entertain around the holidays we have vowed to keep things strictly undemanding, with emphasis on socializing and not silly unnecessary extravagant details. This year be brave and give it a go, bet you like it.

A perfectly set table will include a centrepiece, but do not let that spook you. You are not required to have an expensive, and garish focal point for your table. Instead, use everyday items that you have several identical of, or similar pieces of to make a centrepiece. For example, if you have saved clear vases over the years then pull them out of the cupboard. Next, fill them to different levels with water and float fruit inside them. Or, pull out that punch bowl you never use and place it in the centre of your table. Fill it with fizzy punch and sherbert of bright colours. Then surround the container with your most beautiful glasses, and you have an automatic eye catching feature…amazing! You are bound to impress your visitors or that special someone with your creativity. A perfect excuse to try out a range of special red wines at your next wine tasting party. Then you could use the empty bottles for holding candles and you can create a romantic French restaurant atmosphere in your dining room. Some people may think it is a cliched look, but you can experiment with different shapes and sizes to make your wine bottle and candle centrepiece truly unique.

One of the greatest compliments one can receive regarding their home is for it to be the locale of a wedding. If this is the case, unless you are Martha Stewart, then there will be some brushing up that will have to be conducted before the event. Mainly, you will have to access whether or not you plan to make the interior of your home available to guests, or simply the garden. Once this has been identified the major revisions, or the finishing touches should be undertaken well in advance of the event.

The main reason for getting a head start is that some of your tasks will require down time once they are set in motion. For example, if you are only going to host an outdoor wedding, then landscaping will be a priority. Or, there may be additional garden decorations, such as fountains and gazebos. Either way time is of the essence.

After the ceremony has come and gone, you should be left with at least a few smashing photographs of your home in tip top condition. If there is a professional photographer on hand, then you should request that he or she take at least a couple pictures of your house before and during the festivities. This is a wonderful gift that the couple getting married can give you in appreciation of your willingness to make your home available to them.
