A grand holiday wreath to greet friends and family at the front door is essential for anyone who wants to do things right. If you want a wreath that will reflect your enthusiasm and personal style consider making your own, it can be a whole lot easier to complete than you might think. It all boils down to three basic steps, and how much you put into each is entirely up to you.

The steps are 1. Select a premade wreath of dried grapevine, pinecones or whatever catches your eye 2. Pick out your embellishments of ornaments, berries, garlands or ribbons 3. Attach those goodies to the basic wreath, then step back and assess if more needs to be added.

One last thing, I always like to make a couple smaller versions of the large personalised wreath to place in and around the house. It brings continuity to the space, and is easy and cost effective since you already have all of the supplies.

If you are buying a new double bed, it is quite a big investment, so you need to know that your bed is going to last.

Buying from dreams.co.uk you can rest assured that you are buying a quality mattress, but there are other things you can do to keep your mattress in the best condition. In fact, if looked after properly, a good mattress can last up to ten years.

So here are some tips on caring for your mattress:

Put a cover on your mattress
You should protect your mattress and pillows with washable covers. This will protect your mattress from stains and, as they are easily washable, you know they will be nice and clean. You can also get covers especially for allergy sufferers.

Air your mattress
While it can be tempting to make your double bed the moment you get out of it you should actually pull back the covers for 20 minutes each morning. This allows your body moisture to evaporate and airs the mattress.

Turn your mattress regularly
You should turn your mattress regularly to allow the upholstery and fillings to settle evenly. So you should turn your mattress over (if advised) end to end every three to four months. However, when your mattress is new you should do this more regularly – in fact you should do this every week for the first three months.

Don’t sit on the edge of the bed regularly
If you want to keep your mattress in the best condition don’t make a habit of perching on the edge of your bed and don’t let the kids bounce on it no matter how much they want too.

Unwrap your mattress
When you buy a new mattress, don’t leave it in its plastic wrapper for too long (even if you are not going to use it immediately). You need to remove the polythene as soon as possible as otherwise there could be a build up of condensation which can cause dampness, mildew and rotting.

Vacuum your mattress
You should vacuum your mattress and bed base from time to time to get rid of dust and fluff. However, this should be done with care so as not to damage the mattress or base or pull out any tufts.

Don’t put a mattress on the wrong base
You need to make sure that your mattress matches your bed base and fits your bed base as well. If your bed base is old and your mattress new it might still be quite uncomfortable to sleep on. Whether you want a double divan bed a bunk bed or even a new mattress visit our friends at dreams.co.uk.

There are several things that one might find in a kitchen that they may also locate in a bathroom. Of those, I find them all to be expected except for one. Both will commonly have sinks, tile on the floor and walls, running water, fans, and others that slip my mind at the moment. But, there is one item that I did not consider when listing items that are used in both kitchens and bathrooms, for one because it never crossed my mind, and two because I had never seen it in a kitchen before. Don’t worry I am not going to keep you in suspense any longer, or make you guess.

The latest addition to a kitchen model is the heated towel rack, and I for one definitely want one. Considering how much I love the towel warmers we installed in our bathrooms, and how I was not about to go without them when we decorated those rooms, I am not going to skip this opportunity. Though I imagine for most homeowners, it would be a lot easier to include one of these in a kitchen that is just being built, or renovated, I am lucky enough to have wall space for it.

The measurements are usually around four hundred and six millimetres in height by four hundred and fifty millimetres in width, for the smaller version, or four hundred and sixty millimetres in height by four hundred and sixty-six millimetres in width, for the larger. The heat output for the smaller being about five hundred and seventy three BTUs, and the bigger being approximately six hundred and thirty BTUs. Also, note that often, the units are sold with fittings and brackets included, but the valves are available for purchase separately.

Of course they are made in different finishes, just as the ones hung in the bathroom. So, if you have a chrome accented kitchen you are in luck, or if you want something that will blend then neutral colours are available also. It should bring a nice warmth not only to the kitchen towels, but also to the room.

The placement of one of these in my kitchen is something I am really looking forward to, and to be frank, I secretly hope to receive it very quickly. As I mentioned I do not know anyone with a heated towel rack in their kitchen, and I would feel like the cat that got the cream if I were the first in our circle of friends and family to display one.

While on a trip to the Krabi Province in Thailand I happened upon a very talented oil painter. He had set up a studio amongst a strip of local restaurants, and worked voraciously in front of those strolling by. After a brief review of the numerous pieces he had on display, and even more importantly the one that he was presently working on I concluded that he was the very person to commission to make the painting I had been holding out for.

Spontaneity is difficult for many to embrace, including my husband, but in this case we were on a serious time crunch to get the painting done, dried properly and bundled up for us to transport home in less than three days time. Still, we agreed that this talented soul was the one to accomplish the feat. In conclusion, we are now the very proud owners of an original work of art that hangs above our sofa. It is all the more special to us since it was done far and away from our home. It dominates as our new signature piece, and though there was much risk involved in its creation, it was one that paid off handsomely.

Recently, I found myself on a very time consuming telephone call with a friend regarding the decoration of her daughter’s bedroom. She was going on and on about how she had to get it just perfect for little Laurie and that she was going to get a professional painter to do a mural, a seamstress to hand make curtains, and bedding. I half kidding responded by telling her that it sounded as if she would need to take out a small loan to complete the project, and she groaned that it was the truth.

Wanting to help her, and even more to get off of the phone, I gave her my opinion. I told her she should tone things down, and try to make a beautiful bedroom for her daughter in a more economical manner by obtaining one signature piece. She was open to the idea, and I told her I would put some things together for her and then get back to her. I then evaluated what was really important to her, and I think her daughter and concluded a lovely child’s bed, a couple coats of girlie coloured paint, and some matching decorations would do the trick.

Then to seal the deal I picked out the paint, butterscotch and hydrangea, and located the special bed called Serene Isabelle. Only thing now is that after doing the research, I am wanting a new bed of my own. The content of the article was influenced by information provided by the children’s bed retailer Time4Sleep.

Usually when we think of that one item that stands out in our holiday decorations, we think of something that costs a lot of money. Things like super large trees, expensive centrepieces, or tons of outdoor holiday lights. But, this may be the year that you decide to take another route to establish your signature piece.

There are quite a few inventive ways to make absolutely lovely mantelpiece vignettes, and table settings, but what about doing something more original. I have recently seen a few recycled decorations that I must say are definitely the signature pieces in their space. In fact they are so distinctive they are vivid in my minds eye. So my challenge to you this year is to make something out of materials lying around your home and feature it.

For example, you can make a weather proof faux Christmas tree out of empty plastic Seven Up bottles, and place it outside of your front door. Or, make a door wreath out of old magazines and top it off with a beautiful bow leftover from the gift exchange last year. It should be a ton of fun to get your family involved and to push each others imaginations to the limits. There is just no telling what memorable decorations you could create, or the entertainment it could provide for hours.

If you are looking for an extra special centrepiece for Christmas dinner, then here is a nice idea. Get a mini living Christmas tree and decorate it with ornate card stock with your guest’s names written on them attached to ornaments. They need not be particularly expensive pieces, just an added touch to make everyone feel included. The important thing to make sure is that you have the right tools for the job. If you are not that into DIY, you might need to consider tool hire as to make the Centerpiece. There are some great resources online to help you make your own Centerpiece. The tree does not need to be decorated any further, especially if you have numerous invitees. This will give your guests one more thing to bring home, and remember your hospitality in addition it is a nice ice breaker for those seated next to individuals they do not know especially well, or even a little.

Antiques of all types can create drama and add depth to a room. Mirrors grab attention and draw the eye in to it. Therefore, when one selects an antique mirror it is most definitely on the track of becoming your signature piece. This is true in small, medium, large and extra large forms and an abundant range of shapes too. So it will not be a matter of finding something you like, it will about being able to narrow it down amongst those you admire.

The best part is how enjoyable the search for the perfect antique mirror can be. Depending on your time restraints and level of commitment, the journey can bring you to interesting shops and auction houses in areas you have never visited before. To make that signature piece stand out, mix and match it with contemporary furnishings. It can be quite rewarding to sit a coffee table, for example, alongside retro wooden lounges. If multiple antiques are used in one room, research of their materials and vintage becomes essential. And you may even learn a thing or two about the historical period the item was fashioned.

Some of the most dazzling homes I have witnessed over the years have featured a fireplace. It mattered not whether the style of the home was traditional, historical, or modern, a great fireplace can make an indisputable highlight when done properly. In fact, the impact can be so strong, and the appearance so enchanting that it can save an otherwise average structure from being defined as ordinary.

Of the most recent hearths that I have encountered, and adored were those made of the most unexpected materials. The crème de la crème of those pull off such a successful disguise to the extent that the textiles used had to be identified for me. Creativity in a manner such as this exudes a spirit that infiltrates a home, and sets the tone. Therefore, it is the area of fireplace design that I most look forward to reviewing year after year.
